Prom dress shopping is tons of fun, but it can be super stressful. I’ve been waiting and planning all year for this day and on Saturday, it is finally here — SENIOR PROM! The Ultimate Prom is officially a huge deal! It all started last Tuesday night, when there was a huge launch party for the Ultimate Prom at the Hearst Magazines office building. No more in class lessons for me! I passed all of my tests (so 2) and now all I’ve got to do is 13 hours in car and then I’m free to take my G2 test! Well folks it’s bright and early at the home stead…and by bright and early, of course I mean dark and VERY early. The middle school years is the time when time kids spend begin to spend less time in physical activity, a growing concern as youth obesity rates rise. A new study of middle school girls shows that after-school programs, in addition to school physical education classes, may be one answer to reducing obesity in teens. As controversy swirls about proper clinical use of opioids and other potent pain medications, research reported at the American Pain Society annual meeting shows that, contrary to widespread beliefs, less than 3 percent of patients with no history of drug abuse who are prescribed opioids for chronic pain will show signs of possible drug abuse or dependence.

A Kaiser Permanente study in Diabetes Care that found diabetes before motherhood more than doubled in six years among 175,249 teenage and adult women. This is the largest and most diverse study to examine gestational diabetes as well as pre-pregnancy type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Previous studies looked only at gestational diabetes. 52% of the women in study were Hispanic, 26% were White, 11% were Asian/Pacific Islanders and 10 % were African-American.

Twenty to 30 years ago it was not unusual for children with serious congenital or developmental conditions to die before reaching adulthood. Thanks to research driven medical care, today thousands of these children transition to adulthood every year. With adulthood comes new challenges both to themselves and to their caregivers.

Once again, our library has won the We the People Bookshelf from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This year's theme was Created Equal, and several of books focus on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era. Our library got 19 new books, 15 in English and 4 in Spanish. You can see all of our new books on display in the lobby this month! Also, as we have done in the past, library book groups will be reading a book from the Created Equal list next winter.
